There is a great range of characters in this book – some are real characters and others are just fictional, yet they all feel very believable as if they did all exist together at one time. It brings Ancient Rome to life in vivid detail, but not in a noisome way. Review: This book is so gripping, that your hands stick to the book! I could not put it down from start to finish. But in the end, the life of Domitian lies in the hands of one woman: the Emperor’s mistress. Many have tried to destroy the Emperor: a vengeful gladiator, an upright senator, a tormented soldier, a Vestal Virgin. But the passions of an all-powerful man come with a heavy price, and Thea finds herself fighting for both her soul and her sanity. Remaking herself as a singer for Rome’s aristocrats, Thea unwittingly attracts another admirer: the charismatic Emperor of Rome. Now she has infuriated her mistress by capturing the attention of Rome’s newest and most savage gladiator–and though his love brings Thea the first happiness of her life, their affair ends quickly when a jealous Lepida tears them apart. Genre: Romance, Drama, Historical FictionĪbout: Thea is a slave girl from Judaea, purchased as a toy for the spiteful heiress Lepida Pollia. When her mother dies during pregnancy and Iris' and Ruth's mother steps in as matron of the household, Clara is held as nothing more than the beauty in which her stepmother will buy back her fortune. The merchant's daughter, Clara, befriends the two young girls amidst her fear of leaving her home and her belief that she is a changeling. Less than a month had passed since she’d done something no one ever thought she would do: go back to school. “This thing is so heavy,” said the 13-year-old, who had stuffed her bag with every item she suspected she might need for seventh grade, including 15 pens, a hairbrush, an oversized water bottle featuring the image of a bespectacled giraffe and a body spray labeled “Magic in the Air.” Just before dawn, Ava Olsen lugged her new backpack into the living room and plopped it on the floor.
